Ayurveda originates from the Sanskrit words: Ayu which means ‘life’ and Veda which means ‘knowledge’. Thus, Ayurveda is a whole-of-life philosophy. It originated in India thousands of years ago. Early evidence of Ayurveda is found in the Rig Veda- a sacred hindi text written over 6000 years ago. Like other traditional healing systems, Ayurveda focuses on creating health through balance, aligning individuals with nature and with their own true self. As well as working towards healing on a physical level, Ayurveda acknowledges and works at the more subtle levels of mind and soul.
