The word Yoga derives from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’, meaning union, and yoga is often said to mean “union with the divine”. Originating in India, yoga traditionally referred to a system of philosophy which incorporates morality, posture and alignment, breath, meditation and blissful awareness. Different aspects of yoga were thought to be of greater benefit to different personality types, thus asana and pranayama (posture and breath) have become most popular in the west. Today there are many variations on the traditional forms of yoga.
