In the context of spiritual and personal growth, Awakening is a term used to describe the experience or process of becoming more aware of who you really are, your essential nature, and your connectedness to all that is. Sometimes, Awakening and Enlightenment are synonymous. Other teachers will distinguish between the two- for example an Awakening may be considered the initial realisation that ‘there is more to life than what you see- there is a beneficent presence behind all things’ and Enlightenment is then the state of union with that presence. In the past, I believed that Enlightenment was a thing that only happens to special people after years of spiritual discipline. I prefer to believe that Enlightenment is a presence. It is always available. It is the presence of love, light, truth, awareness that is at the source of all things (including us). You cannot ‘become’ enlightened because you already are enlightenment. It is up to you to recognise this now. Once you awaken to this, you can only continue to awaken to it. Because this presence is an infinite mystery, constantly revealing itself.
