Buddhism is the teachings, and practice of the teachings, of Siddhartha Gautama, who became known as ‘Buddha’, around 500 BC. The practice of Buddhism is widespread throughout the Asian continent, as well as through western countries. There are three main forms of Buddhism: Theravada (the goal of which is personal enlightenment), Mahayana (which includes compassionate devotion to the salvation of all sentient beings) and Vajrayana, or Tibetan Buddhism. In recent decades, Buddhism has come to have a great influence on western spirituality, as many westerners continue to incorporate buddhist philoshophy into their worldview.
