The word meditation has it’s origins in the Latin word meditatio, which originally referred to physical or intellectual exercise and later came to mean "contemplation." While even our prehistoric ancestors may have naturally fallen into a meditative state while watching the ocean, or staring into a fire, the earliest record of meditation techniques is found in 5000 year old Hindu scriptures. In the East, meditation spread across the entire Asian continent after the birth of Buddha, around 500 B.C. Today, there are hundreds of different forms of meditative practice, ranging from moving meditations to sitting still and from concentration on specific objects to an empty, open awareness.
