Philosophy stems from the Greek words philos (lover) and sophia (wisdom). As a discipline, it concerns itself with how one should live (ethics); what sorts of things exist and what are their essential natures (metaphysics); what counts as genuine knowledge (epistemology); and what are the correct principles of reasoning (logic). The focus of philosophical investigation changes with the questions that are relevant to a given era. Naturally, as it is the nature of humans to be inquisitive, many cultures have a philosophical tradition, such as Indian, Persian, Chinese and African philosophy. Western philosophy has it’s origins in Greece around 500BC. Psychology stems from the Greek words psyche (spirit) and logos (knowledge), thus it refers to a study of the spirit or soul. Psychology involves the study of mental processes and behaviour, including phenomena such as perception, cognition, emotion, personality and interpersonal relationships.
