Sufism is a mystic tradition believed to have originated among Muslims in what is now Iraq. The word Sufi is believed to have it’s origins in the Arabic ‘suf’, meaning wool – and referring to early practitioners of Sufism who wore coarse woollen robes. Another possible origin is the Arabic word ‘safa’, meaning ‘purity’. Jalal-ad-din Rumi, a 13th century Persian poet and mystic, is one of the most beloved Sufis in the west today. Sufism today encompasses a diverse range of beliefs and practices, many of which are devotional practices focussed on opening of the heart. Universal Sufism, has some similarities to, but is distinct from, the traditional Sufism practiced within the Islamic tradition.
